Observation on the National Conversation

Republican frontrunners* (alphabetically):

  • Rudy Giuliani
  • Mike Huckabee
  • John McCain
  • Ron Paul
  • Mitt Romney
  • Fred Thompson
Democratic frontrunners* (alphabetically):
  • Hillary Clinton
  • John Edwards
  • Barack Obama
We still have a relic of a different treatment of men and women when we refer to them publicly. All of the men generally appear in the media and conversations as Lastname, but Hillary Clinton is generally called by Firstname. One could argue that this is to differentiate between her and Bill Clinton, and that argument has some merit, because we didn't hear about a Mondale/Geraldine ticket back in 1984; it was Mondale/Ferraro. However, it is still interesting.

*Please don't quibble about the term "frontrunner." I'm using it here to indicate people who have a lot of media coverage.
