The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (the Mormons) has put about $8.4 million into advertising and support for Proposition 8, which is a ballot initiative in sunny California to overturn the recent CA Supreme Court decision to allow same-sex marriage in CA.
Alternately, they could have funded these two charities for a full year. Interesting priorities.

It's kind of ironic that the church with the marriage problem of its own is so involved in our issue of equality. They doth protest too much?
They can go sit on it.
Don't even get me started on the mormons. Mye ex was a mormon. I thought a mainstream protestant church had totally f#@ked me up. The mormons have developed it into an artform.
I was raised Mormon and am appalled at their tactics. They get involved with politics, read letters from the prophet telling people how to vote. It's disgusting, and makes me even happier that I left the church.
What a bunch of scared fuck heads.
UGH
The whole thing is a ploy to get their name out there. And the Mormons have struggled to break into the mainstream Christianity, so coming in hardcore on this issue is supposed to break down walls. Which is funny because Mormons used to have an even more extreme non-traditional view of marriage...all eighteen wives involved.
Grant Haws,
Welcome! The Mormons have had their issues in the past, and I do agree that they are trying to become more mainstream. I wish they'd take a different stand on what "mainstream" means in terms of mixing politics and religion.
