Thought of the Day

I had two good things happen to me yesterday.  Since then, the universe is exacting its revenge.

Mid Life Crisis Man

I park on the seventh floor of one of our parking garages.  Since I get to the office around 6:20am most mornings, I get a pretty good spot, along with several other early birds who remain anonymous, according to the unwritten code of the corporate parking garage.  All of your corporate drones know what I'm talking about.

There is one guy who drives a Mercedes convertible roadster.  He appears to be in his fifties, but he is perhaps trying to appear to be 10 years younger.  None of this is particularly noteworthy, as I completely get the desire to have nice things and to project a youthful appearance.  However, I have noticed on several occasions that I can smell his cologne/body spray from about 15 or 20 feet away on a still day when he is walking briskly to the stairwell, and I am perpendicular to his path of travel.

I don't believe I will ever drive to lunch with this fellow.

Fing Longer

My hand therapist told me that my finger injury is healing on schedule.  Notice that I didn't say "nicely."  If only I were fully-functionaly polydactyl or had the ability to regenerate lost digits, I could take a different route to full use of my hand.

Occupy Capital City

This is the view of the Occupy Movement in Capital City.  The guy in the big tent told me that the other guy would be back later.

I need to send some parking passes and admission tickets to some of our Corporate Choir members who will need to be at a venue next Tuesday, but who will not be at rehearsal on Monday.  I'm sending the tickets to their home addresses, and I decided to include the following letter along with the tickets.

Bishonen vs. Bishonen - FIGHT!

Son made it to the end of the first temple in the new Zelda game tonight.  The Big Boss of the temple is not the traditional giant monster, but instead is a skinny pretty-boy demon with a haircut recently known as emo, but which has had previous incarnations as "new wave" and perhaps other names.  I Am Not A Hairstylist, so Your Mileage May Vary.

The battle was a bit slow at first.  The baddie walked around the room slowly, and Our Hero waggled his sword around to distract the boss into defending one side, then Our Hero would quickly strike from the other.  It was like watching a verbal sparring match at some parties I used to attend.

Coffee Hero

This is an award for the person who makes the coffee on Monday mornings.

We bought The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword today.  The game looks similar to Twilight Princess, but the world seems lighter and more optimistic.  The intro tells you that the world was nearly destroyed some time ago, and your job is to restore humanity to its rightful place from its hide-away.

Interestingly, having a splint on one's right ring finger does little to reduce enjoyment of gameplay.

Do I Care

Until I just looked them up on Wikipedia, I had always envisioned G. Gordon Liddy's face whenever someone mentioned Grover Norquist.

I'm not sure that it matters, though.

Many of the more technical people on our floor have taken to drawing data diagrams or whatever on the windows with dry erase markers.  I drew a database symbol with a nonexistent database name and several nonsense words next to it.  So far, the drawing has been up for five weeks.

The Pond

We're getting a new septic system, and as part of the deal, we're having a pond put in.  It's about 50 feet wide, with a slight kidney shape.  It should be dug in a few days.

School for Another Year

Our school district levy passed by about 50 votes, which is the number by which it failed last time.  This means that we don't need to fire 75 more staff next year.  That's 75 staff across a school district with 3500 kids, K-12.  That's also after having fired 50 staff this year.  In the metro area, our school district is second from the bottom (of ~12 districts) in expenditures per pupil as is.

That means that of the ~6500 votes cast, almost 3250 people were willing to sacrifice a significant quality of education for our students.

Of course, I take my voting seriously.  About a month before an election, I print a sample ballot and then read up on the issues and candidates.  I was a bit alarmed by the mid-40s woman who followed me in the polling place and told the poll workers, "I'm not sure if this is where I'm supposed to vote.  How long is a voter's registration good before it expires?  I voted a few years ago, but my neighbor across the street told me I could vote here."

Well-informed populace, indeed.

Voting Day

Leaving now.  Let's see if I can be the first one there today.

I Hold You, Tendonly

The finger is in a contraption that is supposed to keep it straight for six weeks.  Bleh.  As I tried to express to someone at work through instant chat, "It makes typoing hard.  Rather, it makes typing hard, and typoing easy."

Sunday, November 6, 2011

My right ring finger is now in a small splint.  The ER doctor says the tendon on the outer side detached from the end, so I can't straighten it.

Fell on it oddly.
