I had a conversation with Baldo McNerdy, and he asked that if you could pick a year with both huge highs and lows or a year with not much of anything, would you pick one or the other?

I figured people would maybe switch depending on what's happened recently.  2011 was kind of like the latter.

Bearing a Pall

Shay asked yesterday what would be the situation where one would refuse to be a pallbearer.  The reason it came up was that my grandmother asked me if I was going to be a pallbearer at my stepmother's mother's funeral.  I told her that I hadn't yet been asked, but that of course I would agree if asked.
As it turned out, I was.

That did make me wonder if anyone has ever refused, and if so, for what reason?  Would I have agreed to do so for someone I didn't know at all?  For a notorious criminal?  For someone who had murdered a relative?  I don't know.

Back to Work

I was the only person on my team in the building today.  One teammate worked from home a half day, and everyone else took the day off.

I had lunch with the woman who hired me into Mega Corporation One.  I haven't worked for her since 1999, but it was nice to catch up.  At my five year anniversary, I sent her flowers and a note thanking her for hiring me in off the street.  She called me, all verklempt.  I guess most people don't do things like that.

Son and I went to Stepmom's mom's funeral today.  I was asked to be a pallbearer.  There is only one answer to such a question, if one is able-bodied.

Los Muertos

I just learned that my stepmother's mom passed away last night.  She was having heart surgery yesterday.  I am still not certain whether she died during or after.  Doesn't really matter when, I suppose.

Opposite of Progress, Again

On Monday's drive to work, I heard on our local NPR station that Congress had once again snatched defeat from the jaws of victory, and had undealt the payroll tax cut deal.  I thought to myself that perhaps we could get past this gridlock by using the Lysistrata tactic.  Then I thought that with all of the scandals we hear about, perhaps the Lysistrata tactic would be completely ineffective.

Then I laughed out loud when I realized that very few people would have any idea what the Lysistrata tactic was.

Jin Long

I realized I forgot to include the picture of Jin Long, who is indeed a Bearded Dragon.

Tallguy Martialartist: I knew Santa Claus couldn't visit so many houses by himself on Christmas Eve!
"In some, Krampus has sexual overtones; he is pictured pursuing buxom women."

GDad Lastname:
First entry under "appearances"

Tallguy Martialartist
: I guess that would be doable with a TARDIS.

GDad Lastname: No storage issues, no timing issues, really.

Tallguy Martialartist
: Krampus was a Dalek.
"It's funny if you google it."

GDad Lastname
: Ow. Now my mind hurts.
I think I may build a full size Dalek next summer.

Tallguy Martialartist: I can't understand why you waited so long.

GDad Lastname
: Neighbor Rusty bought two rascal-style scooters at a flea market with no particular idea of what to do with them.

GDad Lastname: Perhaps 1/4" fiberboard could do for the main body.
I can fix that, but it may take a couple of hours.

  1. Krampus was a Dalek
  2. Tallguy knows that "It's Funny if you Google It" is my new catchphrase.

Occupy Dreamland

Last night, I had a dream where we had some issue with the power lines outside our house, and when the lineman was up on the pole assessing the issue, I started angrily lecturing him about his role in the financial troubles we see right now.  Evidently, I was quoting the Occupy Movement playbook or something.  He kept trying to interject that he was just a blue collar guy working to keep food on the table, but I was on a roll.  Finally, he apologized, just to get me to shut up, and I realized that I was probably speaking to the wrong person.

New Addition

This is Jin Long (金龙, or Golden Dragon, according to Google Translate (or 谷歌翻译)), the newest addition to our house.  He or she (can't tell by looking until the herpetological equivalent of puberty) joined our family on Friday.  S/he is already chowing down on crickets and bananas.

Our mourning period for Beardie is over.  We still miss him, but we're moving on.

Son's Christmas Wish

On the way back from a party at some friends, Son expressed a wish for the snow to keep falling so he wouldn't have school until after the break.

Funny that I sort of longed for the same thing.

I Want to Be a Dentist!

I went to get a cleaning and checkup today.  The office is run by a couple who met professionally, then married.  It is quite literally a Mom and Pop shop.

I love the word "quite."  It adds no content, but very nicely adds flavor.

Anyway, Margaret Mary Something was my hygienist.  Her certificate of dental hygienery was dated 1983, so that makes her a few years older than me.  She was, as they say in more polite circles, a bit eccentric.

She was not all that chatty... with me.  She occasionally vocalized the monologue that was going in inside her head, but there did not appear to be an expectation that I needed to pay attention or respond in any way.  On the few occasions where she did address me, it was in a weird tangential way.  "Some people floss better with those floss picks.  I'm nobody's mother and can't tell anyone what to do, but we have some samples of them."

There were a couple of other hygienists in of the other rooms that were very loudly talking to their patients about nonsense and sundries.  Margaret Mary said at one point, "No need for me to be chatty.  We can listen to them."

Her approach to the actual cleaning was, shall we say, aggressive.  But even with that bit of pain, my teeth are extra clean and shiny, and I had some time to think.  I think I'll ask for her again.

More Music

Son's high school school choir had a show today.  There was a duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" performed by two seniors.  The girl was outstanding.  The boy forgot his lines, and he kept repeating, "It's cold outside..." over and over.

The girl managed to carry the song, more or less, and afterward, Marcot Ravenswatch said, "Some day, that girl will make a great best friend to a gay man."

Parties for Hosting

We attended a lovely party at M&M's place this evening.  The spread was delicious; the company was effervescent, and the Hegelian dialectic was conversational.

The xkcd strip here has hover text that says, "An 'American Tradition' is anything that happened to a baby boomer twice."  Utterly brilliant.

Sounds of the Season

The corporate chorus sang at a retirement home this evening.  I had a nice chat with Agnes.  She knows a lot about the deer that come out of the woods on occasion.

And in Other News

The guy that does the traffic reports on our local NPR station has lately been using the word elsewise.  The only people that I ever recall using it are my friend John from high school and me back when.  That just tickles me to no end.

High Color

There's an Android app that does on-the-fly color adjustment for pictures.  This is a wreath with the color adjusted.  The reds seem extra saturated.  I think we all miss Kodachrome.

Point Nine One Six Six Seven

We've made it through eleven twelfths of the year so far.  Now only another eleven months until the 2012 election.  I can hardly stand it.
