Killer Tomatoes

Each year, it seems like a good idea at the time to plant about eight tomato plants.  "Oooo... look!  Better Boy!  Mr. Stripey!  Early Girl!"

Of course, each year, we are awash in tomatoes.  The time has arrived.  I picked six tomatoes today that were at least a half pound each, probably more.

Another Oil Change

I'm here at the dealer getting some service done, and I caught a show on the lobby teevee about trains on the public television station.  One of the people featured was named Leon Noel, which is, of course, a palindrome.  I pointed this out to the fellow that was watching it, and he said that he wouldn't have caught it.

Of course, I had an advantage from having read Ellen Raskin's The Mysterious Disappearance of Leon (I Mean Noel) when I was a kid.

The HR Wave

People sometimes refer to this as "the HR wave."

Scene: a meeting room yesterday around a table with several people who have likely never met.

Facilitator:  Let's go around the table and introduce ourselves.  Tell us your name, your job title, your department, how long you've been at Mega Corporation One, and an interesting fact about yourself.

Person 1:  Hi, I'm Jane Doe.  I'm a Systems Architect for the FrobnoTech Product systems area.  I've been at MCO for 12 years, and I'm going to Maui next week.

Person 2:  Hello, my name is Deepak Balasubramanian.  I'm a development manager for the Corporate Applications and Vending Machine department.  I have been at MCO for 5 years, and I just finished my MBA.

GDad:  Hi!  I'm GDad Lastname.  I'm an IT Business Consultant in the MacroMiniCom Department under Michael Nom de Plume.  I've been at Mega Corporation One for 14 years, five weeks, and three and a half days, but who's counting?  I was once mistaken for a mannequin, and everyone in my household is currently learning to fly airplanes.

Nobody ever believes me.

Captain Ruffles and the Case of the Sky Phantom

Scene: Aviation Class

Aviation Instructorman: One of the more interesting TFRs you'll run into is when the President comes to town.  He's got a 30 nautical mile restriction that moves with him, so it can interfere with our operations in weird ways.  The Vice President also has a restricted zone around him.  Anyone want to guess the radius of that one?

Captain Ruffles: 10 yards?

Wall Street

The Wall Street Bull.  I always thought Wall Street would be bigger.  The people around it are the omnipresent Brazilians.  We see a lot of them when we travel.

Freakin' Lasers

This is a sidewalk at night in front of a nightclub.  The awning had a device that made a little laser show on the sidewalk.  I am obviously not cool enough to go in.

Times Square

Were were approximately as far away as you could be from New Year's Eve.  I wonder what Kathy and Anderson will be talking about next year.

Huge Sandwiches

The pastrami sandwich I got here was

  1. much larger than I felt I could eat in one sitting, and
  2. kind of gross when I went back for the second half after it got cold.

Happy Birthday

Happy birthday, GPop.

Libruhl Agenduh*

If we let same-sex marriage become the law of the land, then our kids will be forced to learn about same-sex households in school.

The schools may also force our kids to learn that 'Mericuh was founded back in "The Age of Enlightenment" instead of in 1950 by Ronald Reagan to fight the commies.

The schools will also shove down the throats of our kids this garbage about al-gebra.  Isn't that Ay-rab language?

*Interestingly, my browser's spellchecker catches "Libruhl" as a misspelling, but not "Agenduh."  I suspect it's because I didn't hit [space] to indicate the word boundary.

Countdown to NYC

We're planning a trip to sunny New York City.  We'll be staying right on Times Square.  I will indeed give your regards to Broadway.

Independence Day

Two hundred and thirty-six years, and still going strong.

I am the only person on my team here at work today.  Our corporate campus is about two blocks from the HUGE FIREWORKS PARTY where they expect about a third to half the population of the greater Capital City area to show up to watch corporate-sponsored fireworks.  Not too many people chose to brave the streets - half of which were closed by the party and half of what remained were closed due to construction.  Even my boss gave me my mid-year review via phone.

On my way out, I wished British Jon a "Happy Awkward Anglo-American Relations Day."  He chuckled.

Schlafen in Ruh

Son has been having trouble sleeping lately.  I think it's partly due to some of the pain medication from his wisdom teeth extraction, and partly due to his sitting on the couch all day.

His band director e-mailed me around noon asking where Son was for percussion rehearsal.  I told him that I had no idea of where he might be, but that I would make sure Son sent him an e-mail or phone call to explain.  When I called Son (remember, this is about noon), he had just gotten up.  I hear that he had not been able to get to sleep until around 5:00am.  This needs to be resolved soon.
